Our resiliency comes from sharing stories, skills, and knowledge that help prepare us for the next pandemic, climate event, and collective challenge. We’re offering three opportunities to get you thinking about how we can thrive together in our community.
What is an Escape Room?
Escape rooms are games where a team of players discover clues, solve puzzles and perform tasks to accomplish a specific goal in a limited amount of time. Commercially, these usually take place in one or more ‘rooms,’ but we’ll be playing at the Net Loft (1960 Murray Road) in both indoor and outdoor settings.
What to expect
Please arrive at least ten minutes prior to your scheduled time. If you’re driving, we encourage you to carpool. We’ll be there to greet you and explain how the game will work. Each time slot can accommodate up to 8 players, so this will be a chance to connect with teammates who you signed up with and/or others who are joining in the fun.
You’ll work collaboratively through a series of stations in and around the Net Loft building.
To progress to each station, you’ll need to solve a puzzle or riddle to ‘unlock’ the next one. Throughout the game, you’ll earn points with activities that test your knowledge and skill when it comes to building community resilience in the areas of food, water, shelter, well-being and emergency preparedness. Earn as many points as possible and challenge other teams to beat your score.

Frequently Asked Questions
hide me
Is it a confined space that I have to escape from?
Despite the name, escaping a room is not always the goal of an escape room game, nor is it necessarily confined to one room.
In this case, the game is held at the beautiful, spacious, and historic Net Loft (1960 Murray Road) on the south end of Gabriola. Your team will work collaboratively through a series of stations set up in and around the building.
How long will it take?
Your team will have 45 minutes to complete the circuit and earn as many points as possible.
Do I have to have a team to participate?
No! Each time slot accommodates up to 8 people, so many groups will be a blend of community members. If you’d like to play, sign up for a time that works for you, and you’ll get to work through the game with others who have signed up in the same time slot. It’s a great way to get to know other Gabriolans and further community resiliency!
Can I play if I have limited mobility?
The game is designed to test a variety of skills and strengths, and there is no racing or lifting of heavy items. Some tasks will require handling and rearranging items. Since you will be playing collaboratively with a team, you can rely on your teammates if a task is outside your comfort or ability. Net Loft is accessible for those with walkers and wheelchairs.
Does it cost anything to play?
This game is free to play thanks to the Triumph Gabriola program, generously funded by The Department of Canadian Heritage and the Government of Canada and coordinated by the Gabriola Arts Council.
Where is the game held?
This game is hosted at the historic Net Loft at 1960 Murray Road on the south end of Gabriola. Street parking is minimal. Please carpool if possible!
Is the Gabriola Thriver game suitable for all ages?
Yes! Kids under five might not get as much out of it, but it’s designed to be fun for all ages. In fact, an intergenerational mix of teammates may work in your favour!
If I’ve signed up for a slot and can no longer make it, how do I cancel my registration?
Open your confirmation email and click on “View/Change my booking.” On your booking page, click cancel and confirm both times a pop-up window appears.
Gabriola Thriver Workbook

We’ve faced some challenging moments this past winter! Let’s come together as a community of local businesses, organizations, and professionals to talk about our struggles, our strength and ideas on how we can support each other in building long-term business resiliency. We’ll open for discussion:
- the specific struggles faced by local businesses, organizations and professionals during these challenges
- what creative solutions were used, and what worked well
- what, if any, proactive solutions can be planned for next fall/winter and;
- how else can we respond to unexpected challenges in collaborative and mutually-supportive ways
By sharing what each of us can do and what support might be needed from others going forward, we can thrive as a business community in the face of unexpected challenges.
